NYC Young Child Expo & Conference - May 1, 2018
Advanced Topics in Teaching Language to Children with Autism
The purpose of this presentation is to describe two current topics in the behavior analytic approach to teaching verbal behavior and how this information can be used to improve the instruction of children with autism. Research and clinical applications related to complex behavior such as understanding what others say and following multiple step directions will be discussed in the context of joint stimulus control. The second topic will focus on the selection and teaching of alternative communication methods for children with autism who fail to develop speaking as their primary form of verbal behavior. Within the discussion of each topic a review of the current research and conceptual analysis will precede an overview of clinical application. In addition, numerous video illustrations of implementation of instructional methods in educational settings will support the discussion.
